Spend Saturday with Your Kids

Teaching Kids to Give Back to their Community

It’s the weekend. Your kids are full of energy and looking for something to do. What better way to channel than seemingly unending fuel than to put it to good use–as a volunteer.

Time spent volunteering can increase children’s social skills, teaching them a new way to connect with people through giving back and sharing experiences. Children often have a natural inclination toward kindness and sharing. Offer them some ideas, ask them how they’d like to help and let the learning happen naturally. Hands-on experience is often one of  the easiest ways to keep kids engaged and entertained.

Children Giving Back!

Children Giving Back!

I was asked to talk to a girl scout troop in Saginaw on Monday about giving and how they could make a difference in their community. They were so eager to share how they have previously given and had awesome ideas for things they could do to help others. I would love to bottle that enthusiasm and spread it around. If all of us just had a little bit of that enthusiasm, it makes me wonder what our communities would look like..Life is so busy, it is hard to find the time. The reality is that giving can take only a few minutes or as much time as we like. Have you done something to make a difference today?

Family Opportunitites to Help Non-Profits in the DFW Area

The holidays are an opportune time to teach our children about giving.  As parents, we want to teach our children to care about others and prepare them for taking over our job as adults.  Children enjoy giving to others and by fostering that when they are young, it can lead to a lifetime of giving to others.  Most non-profits will benefit from homemade gifts or donation drives of toys, food, or clothes.  Families can also come up with some unique ideas, and add even more excitement to the mix.  A few specific family friendly opportunities are listed below or you can check out our Ages for Child Volunteer post to find a non-profit where you can volunteer with your child.

Children’s Books on Giving

Have you considered volunteering as a family activity? Now is the perfect time to start teaching your child about being a valuable part of the community around them.   There is so much that children can learn at an early age that will not only teach them important skills they will use later in life, such as compassion and responsibility, but it will help them understand that they should not take things for granted and that they have much to be thankful for.
